One-part epoxy changes from red to clear under UV

Master Bond UV15RCL is a low-viscosity, cationic-type UV-curing system with a special color-changing feature. The red material changes to clear once exposed to UV light, indicating that there is UV light access across the adhesive material. Although this change in color from red to clear does not indicate a full cure, it does confirm that the UV light has reached the polymer. This epoxy is an excellent electrical insulator. UV15RCL adheres well to metals, glass, ceramics, and many plastics, including acrylics and polycarbonates.

Mercedes-Benz Trucks starts offering on-demand 3D-printed spare parts for older models

Mercedes-Benz Trucks is producing 3D-printed aftermarket plastic parts on demand.

 

 

Owners of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, even and especially older models, may soon have access to an endless supply of spare plastic parts.

The Stuttgart, Germany, auto manufacturer has started offering on-demand production of 30 different 3D-printed parts to owners of its trucks -- and the number of available parts (well, part designs) is growing every day.

The move is the real-world fulfillment of an initial vision of 3D printing when the technology was first getting off the ground years ago: Certain parts would no longer need to be premade and stocked on shelves; they could be ordered and 3D printed on an as-needed basis.

For owners of Mercedes-Benz trucks, the process is pretty simple. Find your part using the special spare-part number in the order code lists or the spare parts catalogs at Mercedes-Benz Trucks, and order it online. The genuine part is 3D printed on demand and then sent through the mail or courier to anywhere in the world.

The available spare parts consist of high-quality plastic components. Covers, spacers, spring caps, air and cable ducts, clamps, mountings, and control elements are just a few examples of economical spare-part production in top quality made possible by using the 3D-printing process.

The printed parts are created with state-of-the-art 3D printers based on the Selective Laser Sintering (SLS) printing process. For the high quality standards of Mercedes-Benz Trucks, the process parameters have been optimized and determined by the Daimler research and development divisions.

Today at parent company Daimler, more than 100,000 printed prototype parts are manufactured for the individual company divisions every year.

As more designs for real-world spare parts are converted and uploaded to the system, their numbers could quickly surpass the number of prototypes created overall by the organization.

The environmentally friendly and resource-conserving 3D-printing process has enormous ramifications for many points along the aftermarket supply chain. The challenge in the spare-parts business lies in securing supply even for model series that are no longer produced. This means that the range also includes spare parts that have very low demand and are made in small quantities every year.

Producing these parts is increasingly uneconomical for suppliers -- production facilities and tools often have to be retained and maintained for years. With the 3D-printing process, these challenges are a thing of the past, because every 3D spare part is available on demand at short notice all over the world. Also, since there are little material excesses from the new manufacturing method, the storage and disposal of waste materials or the material overages from traditional manufacturing are almost wholly eliminated.

In the future, the 3D-printing technology may prove especially beneficial when it comes to the types of materials that the parts are made of. As one interesting example, a genuine part from a design that is 20 years old could be produced in the very latest (and tested) materials as plastics engineering, especially focused on high-temp and corrosive environments, evolves. Lightweighting efforts, too, could find their way into aftermarket-part material selection.

Although Mercedes-Benz Trucks did not divulge any plans to make its designs available to be printed closer to the point of ordering, genuine parts could certainly be printed anywhere in the world as long as approved materials and processes were used.
